Company founder H. David Swain was born and reared in Walkertown, N.C., a town of 600 near Winston-Salem. There, he learned early the traditional values that would guide his life and career: honesty, integrity, a commitment to people and a strong work ethic.

Those are the same values he instilled in Swain & Associates, which he founded in 1978 in Mount Airy, N.C., also known as the hometown of actor Andy Griffith. In 1990, the company moved to Wilmington, N.C.

Early in his career, David developed and constructed more than 45 apartment complexes, most of which the company still owns today.

In 1981, the company added a division specializing in the development of retail shopping centers. It has developed, constructed or re-developed about 20 properties totaling more than 3 million square feet. Swain Management, LLC continues to manage and lease the entire portfolio of shopping centers.

Swain & Associates' development arm has been active in developing and redeveloping office buildings, warehouses, free-standing financial institutions and national restaurant chains.
